Summary

To introduce the ‘Toolkit for Teachers’, a companion resource to the CODES Framework. The Toolkit supports teachers to create lessons and set targets for pupils using AAC.

Method/Activities/Techniques

The CODES Framework was developed by Keycomm in 2011. It is being used in Scotland and internationally to support children and young people who use AAC to communicate effectively. The Framework supports collaborative target setting and aims to extend AAC users’ functional communication skills and provide them with opportunities to use these skills.

Feedback was gathered from professionals that have used the Framework. A need was identified for a bank of ideas and activities that teachers could use to help achieve the targets they had set.

Results/Findings

The Toolkit for Teachers was produced to meet this identified need. It is tied to curricular outcomes, and meaningful “I can” statements.

Conclusions

Teachers have responded to initial versions of the resource very positively. We have identified specific teachers who are starting to provide feedback on the resource.
